The destruction caused by the Second World War gave archaeologists an opportunity to start exploring this little understood part of the Roman city. Excavations have revealed a vibrant area, once crowded with gladiators, soldiers, and craftspeople. Explore this rich history with archaeologist Dr Andrew Lane. Starting in the Amphitheatre, the tour also visits part of the Roman city wall, before finishing in the rarely accessible remains of the Roman Fort Gate.

  • The tour will last for approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Start location: Guildhall Art Gallery and London’s Roman Amphitheatre. On arrival, please check in with the Welcome Desk and meet in the Amphitheatre at the start of the tour.
  • Finish location: Roman Fort Gate preserved beneath London Wall (approximately 600m from the Gallery).
  • Accessibility: Walking between the different venues will take approximately 15 minutes. Some uneven surfaces will be encountered on the tour and a high-visibility jacket (supplied) will be required to access the site of the Roman Fort Gate. The Roman Fort Gate is preserved in a carpark beneath London Wall and is only accessible via steps.
  • The tour is designed for adults. Accompanied children are welcome, although must be carefully supervised at all times and the suggested minimum age is 8 years old.
  • This is a ticketed event and numbers have been kept deliberately low to aid enjoyment and promote health and safety.
